Bluejacking is a harmless prank played on people who have switched Bluetooth on their phones.
blue is taken from Bluetooth, the technology bluejacking uses.
jacking is derived from both "ajack" and "hijacking"
Even thought bluejacking does not resemble hijacking There is no accessing or taking private data from your victim's device.
Bluejacking is totally limited to Bluetooth enabled devices.Bluetooth has a very limited range, usually around 10 metres on mobile phones, but laptops and other instrument with high power transmitters can reach up to 100 meters.

“Bluejacking” is define as sending of unsolicited messages over Bluetooth to Bluetooth-enabled devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, Laptops, sending a contact which typically contains a message in the name field to another bluetooth enabled device via the OBEX protocol.
Few prople say the term “Bluejacking” originated with a user named ajack on esato.com. Some people say that the term bluejacking comes from Bluetooth and hijacking. While that certainly sounds logical, a bluejacker doesn't hijack anything, he just send a contact to the recipient's device. Both parties have absolute control over their devices, and a bluejacker will not be able to take control of your phone or steal your personal information.
You can create a phonebook contact and write a message, eg. 'Hello, you've been bluejacked', in the 'Name' field. Then you can search for other phones with Bluetooth and send that phonebook contact to them. On their phone, a message will popup saying "'Hello, you've been bluejacked' has just been received by Bluetooth" or something along those lines. For most 'victims' they will have no idea as to how the message appeared on their phone. So, personalised messages like 'I like your pink top' and the startled expressions that result is where the fun really starts.
Bluejacking is quite harmless, but because bluejacked people don't know what is happening, they think their phone is malfunctioning. Usually, a bluejacker will only send a text message, but with modern phones it's possible to send images or sounds as well.
But with the increase in the availability of bluetooth enabled devices, these devices have become vulnarable to virus attacks and even complete take over of devices through a trojan horse program

Go to Contacts.

Create a new contact.

Write the short message you want to send on the line next to 'Last name'

Save this contact.

Select this contact and send via Bluetooth.

Your phone will search for devices

All the Bluetooth devices near you will be displayed.

Select any one you like and send.

You have bluejacked someone.

You can also send pictures to your victim by adding them to your bluejack contact. The best thing about this is even if the victim rejects the contact that you sent him/her, the picture gets automatically saved in the victim's My Pictures section.
Note:
It is not that interesting after 2 or 3 trials. Its just a prank. Do NOT harass anyone with this. Be careful at some places and with some peoples, especially in airports where the tolerance level is very low. Also don't send threatening messages. Technically you cannot be traced, but if the victim notices you behaving in a suspicious way with your mobile phone in your hand, you better run for your life.sameermedavhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17971768464503179994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640169413913018017.post-12215441944946120632011-07-18T02:08:00.001-07:002011-07-18T02:34:41.282-07:00benQ siemensOn the main screen type *#06#
The feed format is a standardized subset up the mark-up language known as XML. The resulting feeds can be pushed to RSS readers and Web pages.
The initials RSS can stand for different things, including Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication. RSS content is often referred to as syndicated content because of its wide distribution. Users can subscribe to the RSS feeds of their choice, and then have access to the updated information as it comes in.
The presence of an RSS feed is often signaled by an orange icon of some type. Two examples are shown here.
RSS is an important part of the participatory Web. It has been said that RSS is the "glue" that holds the social Web together. You will encounter RSS in all sorts of places and used for all kinds of purposes. Wherever content is frequently added, you will probably find an RSS feed. This is because many sites on the social Web automatically create RSS feeds and add to the feed as you add content. If you want to keep up with the latest contributions by people on the social Web, reading RSS feeds is one of the best ways to do it.

Reading RSS feeds
To experience RSS, you first need to subscribe to the feed using an rss reader, or aggregator. This is software that displays new items posted to your feed subscriptions and stores the old updates. It is similar to e-mail software, except that the incoming items are derived from RSS feeds.
There are all kinds of RSS readers. Popular Web browsers offer integrated RSS readers. You can also download a reader to your computer or mobile device. Or, you can use an RSS reader on the Web, for example the Google Reader. The advantage here is that you can access your RSS feeds from any computer that is connected to the Web.
Subscribing to an RSS feed is as simple as adding its address to your reader's subscription list. Below is an example from the Google Reader.

A useful list of RSS readers is available on the site RSS Specifications.
tip! RSS feeds can be imported into Web pages. You might be looking at a "typical" Web page without realizing that the content is coming from an RSS feed. There are various programming techniques that make this possible. Or, you can use one of the many user-friendly services on the Web such as RSS2HTML.

Sources of RSS feeds
As noted earlier, RSS is especially popular for distributing news updates and for announcing new content added to the social Web. Various media types can also be updated via RSS feed, including podcasts. A few examples are shown below.
If you click on any of the feed links below, you will be taking the first step toward subscribing to the feed. After clicking, you will be prompted to save the feed to your browser's feed reader, if you have one. Otherwise, you can click on the feed link with your right mouse button and select the option to Copy Link Location. You can then paste the location into the feed reader of your choice.

News updates: Environment news from The New York Times
Tagged items on photo sharing sites: "nature" tag on Flickr
Twitter updates: Al Gore

Creating RSS feeds
How do you create an RSS feed? Well, usually you don't have to lift a finger. As noted above, creating RSS feeds is an automatic feature of many sites on the social Web. For example, if you maintain a blog, the blog software will create the feed.
If you want to create an RSS feed on your own, it isn't too difficult. Some people manually create feeds to distribute their podcasts. Below is a snippet from an RSS template for creating a podcast suitable for uploading to iTunes. Notice how much metadata the feed includes - data about the data included in the feed.
You control the Information Age. Welcome to your world."
This tutorial will explain how you - yes, you - can participate in and therefore control your experience of the Web. The Web allows anyone with an Internet connection to join in. (Unfortunately, some of this capability is blocked in certain countries.) With the proper tools, you can create content either alone or collaboratively, share your content, and comment on the content of others. There are various terms used to describe this phenomenon, including web 2.0, the social web, the read-write web. The topic is huge. This tutorial is intended as a brief introduction to the lay of the land.
It's interesting to watch as the content of the social Web is entering the mainstream of the Web experience. For example, blog posts can be found in search engine results. The search engine Bing indexes Twitter content in order to provide up-to-the-minute results, and Facebook status updates are in the works. This brings up the importance of the social Web to the real-time web. It is becoming increasingly important to the development of the Web to present real-time, or near real-time, content.
A large factor in interacting with the Web is having access to the Web at any time and any place. The Web and its functionalities are becoming increasingly mobile. While laptop computers have been around for years, the focus now is on cell phones and other portable devices connected to the Web. The iPhone is just one example of a device that allows people to take the Web with them wherever they go to access Web sites, social networks, search engines, and location-based information. Mobile devices can keep us connected to the networked world with ever-expanding capabilities.
tip! To keep up with the latest developments, check out the suggested sources on Keeping Current.

First, a word about security and safety
The Web has sometimes been referred to as the Wild Wild Web. As the Web becomes more open to user interaction, dangers can be lurking. Computer viruses of various types, identity theft, bogus e-mail messsages and Web sites, and predators, are just a few of the dangers you might encounter.
When you interact with strangers on the Web, proceed with caution. Don't automatically trust what you see or who you encounter. There are many sites on the Web that can help you become aware of potential dangers and provide guidelines for dealing with them. For an example, check out the useful Internet Safety Project.

Social networking sites
social networking sites are online communities in which members interact. In fact, everything covered in this tutorial involves social networking of some sort. A site that specializes in social networking is focused on making connections among its users. The activities may be limited to one activity or interest, such as sharing videos, to multiple activities such as creating a personal profile, posting your current activity or state of mind, making "friends", engaging in discussions, joining groups, sending messages, sharing photos, and so on. Social networking can involve individuals or institutions, and can be used for recreational, informational, academic, and professional purposes.
Examples: Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, LibraryThing, LinkedIn, Digg
Interactivity among social networking sites is evolving. This means that you can share content, friends, and activities among many sites. Streamy is an example of a site that gathers the activities and shared items of you and your friends from numerous social networking sites.
It is becoming easier to share content from around the Web. Let's say you have read an article that you want to share on your Facebook account. Web sites, especially blog and news sites, sometimes offer an easy way to post this content to the social networking site of which you are a member. Here is an example of the many sharing options featured on a technology blog. If you have an account on any of these services, you can share the posting there with just a few clicks. The ShareThis application is shown in the example below.

Blogs, tweets and the phenomenon of comments
A blog is a journal entry system organized around postings about which readers can comment. Entries are usually organized with the most recent postings first. The word "blog" comes from "Weblog" because a blog consists of a Web-based signed and dated log of individual postings. Blogs often focus on personal narratives or opinion and are usually maintained by single individuals. However, there are also plenty of blogs maintained by groups of people who share the same interests or expertise.
Examples: TechCrunch, The New Old Age, Climate411
The social nature of blogs comes from reader responses to the blog author's postings. These are known as comments. Readers can respond not only to postings, but also to their comments, resulting in a lively conversation. Most comments are written in text. However, video comments are also possible. For example, the TechCrunch blog uses Seesmic for this purpose.

Anyone can start a blog for free. Take a look at Wordpress and Blogger for a couple of examples. If you rent space on a Web server, you can download blog software and run your own customized blog. Some excellent blog software is available at no cost, including WordPress and MovableType.
Technorati and Google Blog Search are two useful search engines for locating content posted to blogs.
microblogging is also popular. This is exemplified by Twitter. With Twitter, you can create an account and blog in spurts of up to 140 characters. Also, excerpted postings or headlines from "regular" blogs can be sent automatically to your Twitter account. For an example, visit the TechCrunch page on Twitter. With a Twitter account, you can choose to "follow" other members and receive their "tweets" on your own page. Twitter is used by the famous and non-famous alike for recreational, professional, commercial, and informational purposes. If you want to know what's happening right now, check out Twitter.
Twitter search is one of many sites that provides a searchable real-time look at up-to-the-minute tweets. Below is an example of a few tweets.

As with many other social networking sites, a universe of creative tools have been built by the Web community to enhance the Twitter experience. For example, check out 99 Essential Twitter Tools and Applications from Smashing Magazine.
The phenomenon of blogs has helped to advance the practice of commenting across the Web. In fact, one hallmark of the social Web is the option for public comment. For example, you can comment on YouTube videos and Flickr photos. Many news sites offer their readers the option to comment on stories. Commenting is showing up in all kinds of Web sites and in all kinds of contexts, so be on the lookout for opportunities.
The nature of any comment you make is up to you. Comments can range from polite to insulting and anything in between. Below is an example of comments from the news sharing site iReport.

Even search engines are getting into the action. The search engine URL.com includes user voting and comments to help rank its results.

Wikis
A wiki is a publishing platform on which many people can contribute new content and revise existing content. The content benefits from the collective knowledge of the contributors, so wikis can be very beneficial for group projects. Some businesses and organizations use wikis to maintain documents. Wikis allow visitors to view the history of page edits. For this reason, wikis are an excellent option for hosting documents that need ongoing edits or updates. Entire books can be publised on a wiki; for examples, visit Wikibooks.
As with blogs, anyone can start a wiki for free. Two options are PBwiki and Wikidot.

Examples: Wikipedia, Digital Research Tools, EduTech Wiki
tip! Some people get confused about the differences between blogs and wikis. For a useful discussion, see the Blogs and Wikis page at the University at Albany Libraries.

Social bookmarking sites
social bookmarking allows you to save articles, news stories, blog postings, etc. from the Web and organize them into folders and/or tags. (See below for a discussion about tags.) The addition of new bookmarks can often be followed with an RSS feed; see the tutorial RSS Basics for more information.

A benefit of social bookmarking is the fact that your bookmarks are online, rather than on your local computer. With Web-based bookmarking, you can access your bookmarks from anywhere. The aspect of public sharing is also important.
Examples: Delicious, CiteULike, Connotea, StumbleUpon, Faves.com

Multimedia
Multimedia is a prominent part of the social Web. Users create audio and video files and share them with the public. Photo sharing is also a popular activity on the social Web. There are also TV broadcasts, radio stations, and Web cams set up by users. On many multimedia sharing sites, users are invited to post comments. For more details about this phenomenon, see the tutorial on Multimedia.
Examples: Flickr, YouTube, Blip.tv, iReport

Real-time chat, texting and phone calls
Real-time communication on the social Web is big. Here we'll briefly cover chat/instant messaging and Web-based phone calls.
The terms chat and instant messaging (im) are sometimes used interchangeably, and refer to the real-time communication between people through typing and other means. With chat and instant messaging, a user on the Web can contact another user currently logged in to the same service and start a conversation. Multiple people can join a chat, and everyone can see each new message as it comes in. Chat is sometimes included as a feature of a Web site, where users can log into the chat room to exchange comments and information about the topic in the particular room.
You can download IM software onto your computer, or use the chat function sometimes offered on the software creator's Web site. Most famous is America Online's (AOL) Instant Messenger, but there are many others. Pidgin and Meebo are examples of chat programs that integrate the chat functionality of several individual services. Some chat software can be embedded on your Web page so that your visitors can easily chat with you. To the right is a screen shot of the embedded Meebo widget.
Chat has evolved into texting. The formal name for this is Short Message Service, or SMS. With texting, you use a mobile device to send short text messages to another device. The rise in popularity of texting has followed the trajectory of the rise in popularity of mobile phones. Nowadays many people use texting rather than make a phone call or send an e-mail.
video chat is also a popular communication option. Why settle for audio or text when you can see the person you're communicating with? All you need is a webcam and video chat software. For example, people who use Google's GMail can engage in voice and video chat. Skype is such popular video chat software that the name has become a verb: "Do you want to Skype today?" Enhanced programs offer a combination of text chat, voice, and video communication. This capability allows people to conference and collaborate in real time. Such features as whiteboarding, document sharing, and collaborative browsing can also be available. This is often referred to as conferencing software.
Examples: Skype, Meebo and Meebo Rooms, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo! Messenger, Pidgin
Finally, you can also make phone calls on the Web. Besides video chat, Skype allows you to make calls to regular and mobile phones. Google offers free phone calls.

Tags
How can you organize your content on the social Web? One way is with tags. People who create or share content on social networking sites often have the option of assigning topic words to their content. These are known as tags. Tags can help organize content into concepts or categories. With so much information on the Web, topical labeling can be useful. Once tags have been assigned, users can then click on a tag of interest and see all the content assigned to that tag.
The choice of tag words is up to the creator. This is one of the drawbacks of tags: different people use different tags to describe similar content. However, it is possible for people to get together and agree on common tags to describe similar content.
The use of tags is showing up in many contexts, as many social networking sites offer its members the option to assign tags to their content. You, too, can be a part of the tagging phenomenon! Tags are especially popular on blogs and social bookmarking sites. The online reference management tool Zotero allows users to organize citations with tags. Also check out the display of popular tags on Flickr. This type of display is known as a tag cloud. The larger the font assigned to the tag, the more often the tag has been assigned. The tag cloud below is derived from a technology blog.

There are many ways to implement tags. Check out The Tagging Toolbox: 30+ Tagging Tools from the blog Mashable. Here you'll find tools for creating, displaying, and viewing tags, both online and offline.sameermedavhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17971768464503179994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640169413913018017.post-56580782324323654592011-07-18T01:51:00.001-07:002011-07-18T02:34:41.349-07:00Multimedia on the Web
Multimedia on the Web
Today's Web presents a diversified multimedia experience. In fact, the Web has become a broadcast medium, offering live TV and radio, pre-recorded video, photos, images, and animations. Expect to encounter multimedia just about anywhere on the Web. This tutorial presents a brief overview.

Plugins, media players, and multimedia types
plugins and media players are software programs that allow you to experience multimedia on the Web. These terms are sometimes used interchangeably. File formats requiring this software are known as MIME types. MIME stands for Multimedia Internet Mail Extension, and was originally developed to help e-mail software handle a variety of binary (non-textual) file attachments. The use of MIME has expanded to the Web. For example, the basic MIME type handled by Web browsers is text/html associated with the file extention .html. MIME types area also used to process multimedia on the Web. A few examples:

Jpeg photo: image/jpeg

MPEG video: video/mpeg

Quicktime movie: video/quicktime

MP3 audio: audio/x-mpeg-3

Flash presentation: application/x-shockwave-flash

Nowadays, many personal computers come pre-loaded with plugins and media players. This is an acknowledgement of the importance of the Web multimedia experience. If your computer doesn't have a particular piece of software, it can be easily obtained from the Web site of the company that created it. Downloading is easy and instructions are usually provided.
plugins are software programs that work with your Web browser to display multimedia. When your browser encounters a multimedia file, it hands off the data to the plugin to play or display the file. Working in conjunction with plugins, browsers can offer a seamless multimedia experience. The plugins needed to experience Web multimedia are available for free.
A common plugin used on the Web is the Adobe Reader. This software allows you to view documents created in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF). These documents are the MIME type "application/pdf" and are associated with the file extension .pdf. A PDF is a type of image file. When the Adobe Reader has been downloaded to your computer, the software will open and display the file when you click on its link on a Web page. Try viewing this PDF document from the U. S. Census Bureau. Sometimes a Web page will display the official PDF icon to alert you that the file is in PDF format.
media players are software programs that can play audio and video files, both on and off the Web. The concept of streaming media is important to understanding how media can be delivered on the Web. With streaming technology, audio or video files are played as they are downloading, or streaming, into your computer. Sometimes a small wait, called buffering, is necessary before the file begins to play. Extensive pre-recorded files such as interviews, lectures, televised video clips, podcasts, and music work very well with these players. They can also be used for real-time radio and TV, including Web-only TV. Popular media players include the Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, QuickTime Player, and Flash Player.

Audio
Audio files, including music, are an important part of the Web experience. Listening to music on the Web is a popular pastime. Audio files of many types are supported by the Web with the appropriate players. The MP3 file format probably the most popular option for audio files.
MP3 files are also the source of podcasts. These are audio files distributed through RSS feeds, though the term is sometimes also used to describe video programming (or vodcast). You can subscribe to a podcast's RSS feed, and listen to the podcast series, with a special type of player called a podcatcher. A podcatcher can be either available on the Web or downloaded to your computer like any other plugin. iTunes can serve as a podcatcher. Keep in mind that you can often listen to a podcast on the originating site. For an example, visit NYTimes.com Podcasts.
Want to create your own podcast? Fondren Library at Rice University offers useful instructions in their tutorial Podcasting Howtos.
tip! Podcast series are available via RSS feed. To learn about RSS, visit the tutorial RSS Basics.
Thousands of radio stations broadcast live on the Web. Just use a search engine to locate a station's Web site, and follow the links to the live broadcast. Visit this page for an example of one radio station's live broadcasts.

Video
Streaming video is the backbone of live and pre-recorded broadcasting on the Web. YouTube is one of the most popular sites on the Web for pre-recorded video. Real-time professional or personal broadcasts are also very popular.
The Web is a medium for exchanging information among professionals. A live professional broadcast from a conference, company, or institution is sometimes referred to as a webcast. A variation on this is a webinar, a seminar broadcast on the Web.
To watch video discussions by experts in their fields, take a look at:

Academic Earth, a collection of free video lectures by top scholars

BigThink, where experts discuss current events

Bloggingheads.tv, where academics, journalists, and others have two-way conversations, or diavlogs, on substantive topics

iTunes U, which offers free lectures from a handful of universities

WebMedia: Special Events at Princeton University, offering archived speeches and conferences

live cams and live tv are a big part of the real-time video experience available on the Web. Live cams are video cameras that send their data in real time to a Web server. These cams may appear in all kinds of locations, both serious and whimsical: an office, on top of a building, a scenic locale, a special event, a fish tank, and so on. Live cams are stationary and only broadcast what is in their line of sight. Moving video takes live broadcasting to the next level: TV on the Web. Some people wear portable cameras and allow the public to observe their lives - an intense form of reality TV. Justin.tv was a pioneer in this type of live broadcasting. Other people broadcast their involvement in specific topics, such as cooking or technology. Check out Blip.tv and Ustream for examples.
Live TV broadcasts abound on the Web. As with radio stations mentioned above, use a search engine to locate a station's Web site and follow the links to the live broadcast. There are also plenty of pre-recorded network TV shows available on the Web. Check out Hulu for an example of a site that hosts this type of content.

Embedded media
As you browse the Web, you can experience multimedia on the sites of the people who sponsor or create the broadcasts. There are also aggregator sites you can visit, including Flickr and YouTube.
It's also possible to embed multimedia on your own Web pages. The capacity for unlimited distribution is a major reason why multimedia on the Web has become so popular. Also, it's quite easy to do. In most cases, embedding a media file is just a matter of copying code and pasting it onto your Web page. The two examples below took only a few minutes to complete. Both require the Flash player (MIME type of application/x-shockwave-flash).
Here is an embedded video from YouTube.

Here is a Picasa slideshow from my 2008 high school reunion. You might enjoy looking at my photos of the historic Emma Willard School in Troy, NY.

For advice on embedding media (and other file types, too), check out How To Embed Almost Anything in your Website from the technology blog Digital Inspiration.
tip! The phenomenon of embedded media is related to the concept of widgets. A widget is a snippet of a program running on another site that can be embedded on your own Web page. Check out Widgetbox to get an idea of some widgets you might want to try.sameermedavhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17971768464503179994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640169413913018017.post-45183187821646851982011-07-18T01:48:00.001-07:002011-07-18T02:34:41.363-07:00Understanding the World Wide Web
Understanding the World Wide Web
This tutorial covers the basics of the World Wide Web, focusing on its technical aspects. After all, the Web is a technological phenomenon. Therefore it's useful to understand some of the fundamentals of how it works.
The world wide web is a system of Internet servers that supports hypertext and multimedia to access several Internet protocols on a single interface. The World Wide Web is often abbreviated as the web or www.
The World Wide Web was developed in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee of the European Particle Physics Lab (CERN) in Switzerland. The initial purpose of the Web was to use networked hypertext to facilitate communication among its members, who were located in several countries. Word was soon spread beyond CERN, and a rapid growth in the number of both developers and users ensued. In addition to hypertext, the Web began to incorporate graphics, video, and sound. The use of the Web has reached global proportions and has become a defining element of human culture in an amazingly short period of time.
In order for the Web to be accessible to anyone, certain agreed-upon standards must be followed in the creation and delivery of its content. An organization leading the efforts to standardize the Web is the World Wide Web (W3C) Consortium. Take a look at the W3C Consortium Web site to get an idea of its activities. A lot of the material is technical because, after all, the Web is a technical phenomenon.

Protocols of the Web
The surface simplicity of the Web comes from the fact that many individual protocols can be contained within a single Web site. internet protocols are sets of rules that allow for intermachine communication on the Internet. These are a few of the protocols you can experience on the Web:
HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol): transmits hyptertext over networks. This is the protocol of the Web.

E-mail (Simple Mail Transport Protocol or SMTP): distributes e-mail messages and attached files to one or more electronic mailboxes.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol): transfers files between an FTP server and a computer, for example, to download software.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol): allows delivery of voice communications over IP networks, for example, phone calls.

The Web provides a single, graphical interface for accessing these and other protocols. This creates a convenient and user-friendly environment. Once upon a time, it was necessary to know how to use protocols within separate, command-level environments. This meant you needed to know the text commands and type them out to make things happen. The Web is much easier, since it gathers these protocols together into a unified graphical system. Because of this feature, and because of the Web's ability to work with multimedia and advanced programming languages, the Web is by far the most popular component of the Internet.

Hypertext and links: the motion of the Web
The operation of the Web relies primarily on hypertext as its means of information retrieval. HyperText is a document containing words that connect to other documents. These words are called links and are selectable by the user. A single hypertext document can contain links to many documents. In the context of the Web, words or graphics may serve as links to other documents, images, video, and sound. Links may or may not follow a logical path, as each connection is created by the author of the source document. Overall, the Web contains a complex virtual web of connections among a vast number of documents, images, videos, and sounds.
Producing hypertext for the Web is accomplished by creating documents with a language called hypertext markup language, or html. With HTML, tags are placed within the text to accomplish document formatting, visual features such as font size, italics and bold, and the creation of hypertext links.

This is a paragraph that shows the underlying HTML code. This sentence is rendered in bold text. This sentence is rendered in italic text.

HTML is an evolving language, with new tags being added as each upgrade of the language is developed and released. Nowadays, design features are often separated from the content of the HTML page and placed into cascading style sheets (css). This practice has several advantages, including the fact that an external style sheet can centrally control the design of multiple pages. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), led by Web founder Tim Berners-Lee, coordinates the efforts of standardizing HTML. The W3C now calls the language XHTML and considers it to be an application of the XML language standard.

Pages on the Web
The backbone of the World Wide Web are its files, called pages or Web pages, containing information and links to resources - both text and multimedia - throughout the Internet.
Web pages can be created by user activity. For example, if you visit a Web search engine and enter keywords on the topic of your choice, a page will be created containing the results of your search. In fact, a growing amount of information found on the Web today is served from databases, creating temporary Web pages "on the fly" in response to user searches. You can see an example of such a page below, taken from the search engine Hakia. This page only exists as a result of a search.

Access to Web pages can be accomplished in all sorts of ways, including:

Entering a Web address into your browser and retrieving a page directly

Browsing through sites and selecting links to move from one page to another both within and beyond the site

Doing a search on a search engine to retrieve pages on the topic of your choice (See: The World of Search Engines)

Searching through directories containing links to organized collections of Web pages (See: The World of Subject Directories)

Clicking on links within e-mail messages

Using apps on social networking sites or your mobile phone to access Web and other online content

Retrieving updates via RSS feeds and clicking on links within these feeds (See: RSS Basics)

Retrieving doucuments on the Web: the URL and Domain Name System
url stands for uniform resource locator. The URL specifies the Internet address of a file stored on a host computer, or server, connected to the Internet. Web browsers use the URL to retrieve the file from the server. This file is downloaded to the user's computer, or client, and displayed on the monitor connected to the machine. Because of this relationship between clients and servers, the Web is a client-server network.
Every file on the Internet, no matter what its protocol, has a unique URL. URLs are translated into numeric addresses using the domain name system (dns). The DNS is a worldwide system of servers that stores location pointers to Web sites. The numeric address, called the ip (internet protocol) address, is actually the "real" URL. Since numeric strings are difficult for humans to use, alphneumeric addresses are employed by end users. Once the translation is made by the DNS, the browser can contact the Web server and ask for a specific file located on its site.
For example, 207.46.192.254 is also www.microsoft.com.
Anatomy of a URL
This is the format of the URL:

protocol://host/path/filename
For example, this is a URL from the site of the U.S. Senate of a live video stream sent by a camera pointed at the U.S. Capitol:

http://www.senate.gov/general/capcam.htm
This URL is typical of addresses hosted in domains in the United States. The structure of this URL is shown below.

Protocol: http

Host computer name: www

Second-level domain name: senate

Top-level domain name: gov

Directory name: general

File name: capcam.htm

Note how much information about the content of the file is present in this well-constructed URL.
Several generic top-level domains (gTLDs) are common in the United States:

com

commercial enterprise

edu

educational institution

gov

U.S. government entity

mil

U.S. military entity

net

network access provder

org

usually nonprofit organizations

In addition, dozens of domain names have been assigned to identify and locate files stored on servers in countries around the world. These are referred to as country codes, and have been standardized by the International Standards Organization as ISO 3166. For example:

ch

Switzerland

de

Germany

jp

Japan

uk

United Kingdom

Additional top-level domain names were approved in 2000 by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN): .biz, .museum, .info, .pro (for professionals) .name (for individuals), .aero (for the aerospace industry), and .coop (for cooperatives). Unconventional domain names have been marketed outside of the system, for example, .tv for sites that offer content similar to television broadcasts. In 2011, ICANN decided to open up domain names without restriction, including in any language or written script. The cost of establishing and maintaining a new name is quite expensive - $185,000 for the application fee alone - so the actual effect of this change will be limited.
As the technology of the Web evolves, URLs have become more complex. This is especially the case when content is retrieved from databases and served onto Web pages. The resulting URLs can have a variety of elaborate structures, for example,

http://spills.incidentnews.gov/incidentnews/FMPro?-db=images&-Format=maps.htm
As a growing number of databases serve content to the Web, these types of URLs are appearing more commonly in your browser's address window.

Programming languages and environments
The use of programming languages beyond HTML extend the capabilities of the Web. They are used to write software, process Web forms, fetch and display data, and perform all kinds of advanced functions. It is difficult to talk about these languages without getting into too much technical jargon, but here is an attempt. What follows is a brief guide to some of the more common languages in use on the Web today.
CGI (Common Gateway Interface) refers to a specification by which programs can communicate with a Web server. A CGI program, or script, is any program designed to process data that conforms to the CGI specification. The program can be written in any programming language, including C, Perl, and Visual Basic Script (VBScript). In the early days of the Web, CGI scripts were commonly used to process a form on a Web page. Perl is popular with Google, and is also the language of the Movable Type blog platform.
Active Server Pages (ASP): Developed by Microsoft, ASP is a programming environment that processes scripts on a Web server. The programming language VBScript is often used for the scripting. Lightweight programs can be written with this language. Active Server Pages end in the file extension .asp. For an example, check out Databases and Indexes at the University at Albany Libraries.
.NET framework: Also developed by Microsoft, this development framework is a more powerful one than ASP for writing applications for the Web. Programming languages include C+ and VB.Net. ASP.Net is a related environment, producing pages with the file extensions .aspx. The Microsoft site is a good example of a site created with the .NET framework.
PHP: This is another server-based language. It is frequently the language used to write open source (e.g., nonprofit, community-created) programs found on the Web, including MediaWiki (the software that runs the Wikipedia), and the popular blog software WordPress. While PHP functionality can be installed on Windows servers, it is native to the Linux server environment and commonly used there.
Java/Java Applets: Java is a programming language similar to C++. Developed by Sun Microsystems, the aim of Java is to create programs that will be platform independent. The Java motto is, "Write once, run anywhere." A perfect Java program should work equally well on a Windows, Apple, Unix, or Linux server, and so on, without any additional programming. This goal has yet to be realized. Java can be used to write applications for both Web and non-Web use.
Web-based Java applications are usually in the form of Java servlets. These are small Java programs fetched from within a Web page that can be downloaded from a server and run on a Java-compatible Web browser. A Web page that links to a Java servlet has the file extension .jsp.
JavaScript is a very popular programming language created by Netscape Communications. Small programs written in this language are embedded within a Web page, or fetched externally from within the page, to enhance the page's functionality. Examples of JavaScript include drop-down menus, image displays, and mouse-over interactions. The drop-down menus on the site of the UCLA Library shown below are a good example: when you hover your mouse over the menu item, a set of sub-menus opens up below.

XML: XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is a mark-up language that enables Web designers to create customized tags to provide functionality not available with HTML alone. XML is a language of data structure and exchange, and allows developers to separate form from content. With XML, the same content can be formatted for multiple applications. In May 1999, the W3 Consortium announced that HTML 4.0 has been recast as an XML application called XHTML.
AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. This langauge is used to create interactive Web applications. Its premise is that it sends data to the browser behind the scenes, so that when it is time to view the information, it is already "there." Google Maps is a well-known example of AJAX. A different kind of example can be found with SurfWax LookAhead, an RSS search tool that retrieves feeds as you type your search.
SQL (Structured Query Language): This is a language that focuses on extracting data from databases. Programmers write statements called queries that retrieve data from the tables in the database. Some Web sites are created extensively or entirely from data stored in database tables. You can often tell that a SQL query has produced data on a page by the presence of a question mark (?) and a record number in the URL, as the example below illustrates.

Mashups
Programs on the Web can be flexible. Sometimes they are combined with each other to form ehanced presentations. These are known as mashups.
A mashup is a Web application or Web page that combines data from two or more external sources. Mashups give you access in one place to information available in multiple places.
There are all kinds of mashups on the Web. One example is Earthquakes In The Last week, a mashup derived from data from the U.S. Geological Survey along with Google Maps. Another is Mashpedia, a mashup of the Wikipedia encylopedia along with current information gathered from the social Web.

Last but not least: Applications (apps)
Applications, commonly called apps, are small programs that run within various online environments. These programs allow you to enjoy functionalities that enhance your experience within that environment.
Social networking sites often make use of apps. For example, Facebook is well-known for featuring thousands of apps created by Facebook or outside developers. These apps allow you to play games, shop, form issues-based communities, find family or classmates, etc.
Mobile phones are another environment within which apps are both popular and useful. In fact, no decent mobile phone these days comes without the option to add apps. A good example is the iPhone, which offers hundreds of thousands of apps in all sorts of areas, from work and education to travel, lifestyle, entertainment, and so on. Also take a look at the Android Market site to browse the apps available for the Droid phone. It is safe to say that apps make the mobile phone what it is today.
Apps are a very fast-growing area of the networked experience. Some observers believe that apps will be a focus of developments in the online world in the coming years.sameermedavhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17971768464503179994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640169413913018017.post-40763627073525620372011-07-18T01:43:00.001-07:002011-07-18T02:34:41.373-07:00optimization tutorialThere is far more to search engine optimisation than the information given on this page which is is very basic, but if you incorporate these elements into the fabric of your website it will improve your rankings in the search engines. For your business to be successful on the web you should appear in the top 20 of the results returned by the search engine for a particular product or information that has been searched for by the potential customer. If you're serious about your business making money on the web, it is essential that you hire a professional to carry out the optimisation of your website. The process begins by choosing a domain name and opening an account with a company to host your website. Avoid the cheap or "free" accounts as these tend to be deemed unimportant and are not always indexed by the engines for various reasons.
This search engine optimisation tutorial looks first at the META tags. There are quite a few but the only ones you need concern yourself with for this basic tutorial are the ones below.

Your important phrase here

The title tag is the most important tag that is used in the optimisation process. Use the keywords deemed important for your product only once and use a character length of up to 115 letters. Remember that this tag will be seen in the returned results, so it would be to your advantage if it reads sensibly, and don't forget to use a unique title for each page.

The description tag is the second most important tag used. Write two or three sentences about your products using your keyword phrases no more than twice. Some search engines will show all your description, others will show a percentage.

Only one or two search engines use the keyword tag because the tag has been abused so much in the past. It is still worth using, so place your important keyword phrases in the tag and don't forget that mis-spellings are likely in many searches.
The search engine optimisation process should be carried out on all your pages, the reason being that all pages including content related to your products can be an entry page through the search engines. So use the meta tags with information in the tags relating to the content of that particular page.
The text content on your important pages should contain no less than 250 words relating to your business and products. The search engines only read text and links so use text links for your navigation system. If you would rather use graphical navigation buttons do so, but still place your text links somewhere on your main page, or on a sitemap that is linked from your main page.

The tag above is the image tag that is used with your images. Make sure you use the ALT tag within the image tag and keep the images on your main page to a minimum. The information within the ALT tag should if possible contain your most important keywords.
The search engines place some importance on other websites that link to yours and are viewed as a positive vote for your site. So to make the most of your optimisation efforts, create a links page and exchange links with websites that have content related to yours, although one way links are much more beneficial if you can get them!
Finally, submit your site to all the major search engines and directories. If you can submit through paid inclusion, do so, as this will get your site indexed within a week - free submission can take months. As already mentioned, this is a very basic search engine optimisation tutorial and if you carry out the above instructions it will in time improve your rankings. For optimum results we can design, build and carry out the optimisation needed on an ongoing basis to drive the targeted visitors to your site for your products or information. Or we can optimise your existing site.sameermedavhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17971768464503179994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640169413913018017.post-60174027190716520962011-07-18T01:42:00.001-07:002011-07-18T02:34:41.473-07:00basic website design tutorialThis very basic website design tutorial will enable you to develop a reasonable personal website. A business website is another matter, however, the development of which you should seriously consider leaving to a professional who has the copywriting and optimisation skills to get it positioned high in the search engines as high rankings and targeted visitors are as important as the design of your site, if not more so.
The single most important factor to remember when designing websites is that users will access them via a variety of different computers and browsers, which may mean that how they see your web pages is entirely different to how you imagined they would when you designed them. This is because some computers and browsers (thankfully not too many!) may not support features such as colours, graphics, photographs, JavaScript and CSS (cascading style sheets). It should also be remembered that some computers and modems are much faster than others, and that some display monitors have a larger "desktop" than others.
This creates a dilemma for the website designer. If you design your pages for the lowest common denominator, they are certain to be drab and un-interesting, but on the other hand, if you utilise HTML extensions developed only for a particular browser, then many of your visitors will not be able to appreciate them. There is no perfect solution to this but generally speaking, if your web pages work as you intended with the latest fully supported versions of Netscape's Navigator, Firefox and Microsoft's Internet Explorer browsers, then the vast majority of web users will view your pages correctly.
Fonts and colours are important to website design. You should always ensure that your pages are both easy-to-read and "easy on the eye" - a result readily achieved by using light coloured backgrounds and dark text. Background colours should not be the dominant feature of your pages. Use white wherever possible, especially if your page contains mainly text, or if you prefer something a little less stark, use a pastel colour. Always avoid the default grey background of most browsers to make your pages stand out.
It is tempting to use a variety of exotic fonts for the text but it should be noted that not every user will have these fonts already installed on their computer. Instead, use commonly available true-type fonts such as "Times Roman" as your 'proportionately spaced' font and "Courier" as your 'mono spaced' font. Also, font size should be reasonably large for further clarity.
Due consideration should be given to the colours of your hyperlinks. It is very tempting to use a variety of colours but to prevent your visitors becoming confused, it is wiser to stick to the range of colours normally used. Use blue for the links not yet selected or "unvisited" and red for links already selected or "visited". Use purple for links that have already been visited. Experiment for yourself, but remember this advice and your website will be both attractive and easy to interpret.
Finally, make liberal use of tables and cascading style sheets to set your left and right margins and remember, table cells can contain pictures and graphics as well as text. Also bear in mind that long lines of unbroken text are more likely to be overlooked than shorter variable lines of well positioned paragraphs.
Website Design Tips:
1. Opening graphics should display fully on the user's screen without scrolling, so that means a maximum size of 640 by 480 pixels. Also, re-use graphics such as banner headlines as much as possible as once downloaded, graphics are stored in a memory cache and are thereafter displayed from memory.
2. Keep graphics and images small and simple so that they are downloaded as quickly as possible. There is nothing so frustrating for a web user as waiting for large images to appear.
3. Always use the ALT attribute with the tag so that a description of the graphic will appear before it is downloaded. This is particularly important for users with browsers that don't support graphics or who connect to the web using a non-graphical terminal.
4. Crop your graphics to show just the important images. Especially crop out large expanses of sky or sea or other areas of mostly single colours.
5. As a general rule, use JPEG images for photographs and GIF images for art and graphics.
General:
1. If your website is composed of multiple pages, always provide links back to your home page so that users can easily return to your "table of contents". Or better still, set up your navigation so that all important pages link to each other.
2. Break up your website into small pages to avoid unnecessary scrolling and make sure that your navigation functions are near the top or the bottom of the page. If you must have a long scrollable page, then ensure that the user has frequent links back to the top of your page.
3. Always test your pages with a number of browsers; that means Firefox, Netscape's Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer as a minimum. Also test your pages on both small and large monitors.
4. Somewhere on your page, usually at the end, include a note as to when it was last updated.sameermedavhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17971768464503179994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640169413913018017.post-62107439936205422102011-07-18T01:23:00.001-07:002011-07-18T02:34:41.532-07:00introduction to htmlHTML Tag Formats.
This introduction to HTML ( hyper text mark-up language ) provides you with an appreciation of the most important tags and their purpose, and a comprehensive alphabetic list of the tags supported by both Netscape's Navigator, Firefox, and Microsoft's Internet Explorer browsers. Some of these tags are a little outdated now but still work. HTML documents are simple text files created by a word processor or text editor. Always remember, when saving an HTML document, it must be saved as a text file or it will not be recognised by your web browser. All HTML tags are enclosed by "less than" (<) and "greater than" (>) signs, also referred to as angled brackets, and mostly consist of start and end pairs such as
and
, which indicate the start and end of pre-formatted text. All end tags consist of the start tag preceded by a forward slash sign ( / ), which makes them easy to remember.
HTML tags are not generally case-sensitive and lower, upper and mixed-case formats work equally well. However, it is best to choose one or the other and stick to it at all times. The one exception to the above "case" rule is where file names are invoked from within an HTML tag; in this circumstance you must conform to the casing conventions of the web server.
Tag attributes are always entered between the tag command word and the closing angled bracket; for example:

Some tags can also be nested within other tags; for example:

This is my Home Page heading
.
In the case of tag nesting, the order of tags is vital; whenever you use a closing tag, it should always correspond to the last unclosed opening tag. It should also be noted that HTML browsers ignore any extra spaces inserted within text. This allows the HTML author to insert spaces and returns strategically so that the code can be viewed more easily. However spaces and returns cannot be used to format your web pages; rather you must use specific HTML tags such as
( new paragraph ) or
( new line ) for page formatting purposes. Some tags, such as the heading tags
to
, include automatic line breaks, which means that you don't need a
or
tag following a heading tag.
HTML Document Tags.
Each HTML document should have the following document tags at the start and end of the page in the order shown, although with most browsers this is not a mandatory requirement:

Identifies the document as HTML.

Indicates the start of the "heading" section.

The document title goes here.

Indicates the end of the document title.

Indicates the end of the "heading" section.

The remainder of your document follows.
Page content goes here.

Indicates the end of the main body.

Indicates the end of the HTML document.
The
tags contain the document title tag
, the contents of which appears in the browser's title bar. The content of the
tag is also used by many web search engines or crawlers as the web site descriptor and it also appears in a browser's history list and bookmarks, so be sure to always use appropriate text in your document title.
The
tags contain the page content and the
tag extensions can also be used to define the colour scheme of your web page. For example the following tag:

sets the page background colour to white, the default text colour to black, the "unvisited" hyperlinks to red, the "clicked" hyperlinks to blue and the "already visited" hyperlinks to purple.
Although the above tags are not mandatory, it is good practice to use them in all HTML documents; as a minimum you should always include a
tag to allow search engines to find appropriate pages on your web site. A title cannot include any formatting tags, images or links to other web pages. As the web becomes more complex with more and more document types being supported, the
tag will clearly identify your file as an HTML document, and might well become a mandatory requirement in the future.
NB: All other tags in an HTML document must be placed within the
and
tags.
Internet technology originally evolved in the early 1960's, at the instigation of the US defence department, to enable strategic computer networks to remain operational in the event of one or more nodes being out of commission during a nuclear war. The logic was simple; bombing a system based on an individual mainframe computer network would result in only a few nodes being lost, allowing the other nodes to route around the other nodes.
This was achieved by using a methodology known as "packet switching", which worked by breaking up a data file into small "packets" and transmitting them to another location by multiple routes where the packets would be re-assembled back into the original data file and duplicate packets discarded.
In 1969, the first packet-switching network was developed by the Pentagon's Advanced Research Project's Agency. Known as ARPAnet, the original network connected 4 research establishments, and by 1972 the network had expanded to incorporate 40 nodes. ARPAnet soon became a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among scientists and academics, and within a few years the number of computers connected to the network increased to more than 100.
By the mid-1970's, many US government agency networks were linked by ARPAnet and, because the networks were of a disparate nature, a common network protocol called TCP/IP ( Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol ) was developed and became the standard for inter-networking military computers. By 1983, the word "Internet" became the common term for referring to the worldwide network of military, research and academic computers.
However, it is only since 1993 that the Internet has become popular on a global basis and today is universally available to anyone with a computer, a modem and access to a telephone line. Using TCP/IP, computers on the internet operate in an operating system independent environment allowing almost any kind of computer to talk to any other computer, completely transparently.
Computers on the Internet are designated either clients or servers, servers, as the name implies, are configured to perform specific tasks and are usually controlled by high-powered operating systems such as UNIX or windowsNT, while clients are used to access the resources and services provided by the servers and are usually PCs or workstations.
While the technology of the Internet is undoubtedly powerful in its own right, it only becomes useful to the general public when providing services such as Electronic Mail ("E-mail" ), file transfer via File Transfer Protocol ( "FTP" ) and access to WWW, the World Wide Web.
WWW, The World Wide Web
In 1992, a scientist at the European High-Energy Particle Physics Laboratory ( CERN ), Tim Berners-Lee, developed the concept of the World Wide Web ( "WWW", "W3" or simply "the web" ) as we know it today.
The web provides access via the Internet to media-rich documents known as web pages, which may contain formatted text, images and multimedia. each web page has a unique address known as a Uniform Resource Locater or "URL", which allows a page to link to any other page on the Internet via hyperlinks, "clickable" text or images, sometimes known as "hotspots", embedded in the page itself.
A URL is made up of the access method, the name of the server, the directory where the page is stored, and the file name of the page. The URL http://www.microsoft.com/download/index.htm refers to the file index.htm in the directory download on the web server www.microsoft.com using the http ( hypertext transport protocol ) access method.
Web pages are stored on an Internet computer known as a web server and access to its pages is provided by a web browser, a web navigation tool with a user-friendly interface. A single page or a group of related pages are said to occupy a web site, which has a home page or starting point of reference. Web-pages are constructed using a common language known as HTML or Hypertext Mark-up Language and access to the web for the general public is supplied by Internet Service Providers or ISPs, who charge monthly or yearly subscriptions for this service.
The first web browser, known as Mosaic, was developed in 1993 at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications ( NCSA ) in the university of Illinois. The use of Mosaic spread rapidly through the academic community and within a year more than 2 million users were browsing the web. However today the most popular web browsers are Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape's Navigator, and Firefox.
It is predicted thatbefore much longer every person in the world would be connected to the web! But what is the web used for? Increasingly, the web is being utilised for commercial purposes, with cyberspace "shopping malls" being established with increasing regularity. A good example is the "Barclaysquare" web site, which hosts a range of independent businesses offering goods as diverse as flowers clothing and food. Goods are paid for by credit card and delivered the next day or sooner. The web is also extensively used by common interest "News Groups" and for classified advertising, world news, education and many others.
Security On The Internet
Security on the web ( or the lack of it! ) has been the subject of much concern and debate. Commercial transaction processing over the Internet has been inhibited thus far because of justifiable fears concerning the security and privacy of such transactions. In theory, as soon as you connect a corporate system or "Intranet" to the Internet, you create a major security risk.
Internet servers and browsers have long had the capability to restrict access to documents and files by means of user identifiers and passwords. However for secure commerce a higher level of security is required and this has resulted in the development of servers and browsers equipped with sophisticated encryption technology. This technology ensures that all data packets are encrypted so that a packet can only be read by its destination server.
There are a number of ways to solve the problem of unauthorised access to an Internet web server. One is the use of a "packet router" to add data packet filtering by IP address and port; however, this method has several known shortcomings, which allow the more sophisticated hacker to direct a connection that has already been approved by the router.
More sophisticated security is provided by products known as "firewalls", which have been developed to provide a security screen at both the server level and the application level. Firewalls sit between the Internet and corporate Intranets and examine every packet of data passing both in and out of the network.
There are essentially two types of firewall groups: "packet filters" and "proxy servers". Packet filters add filtering capabilities, authentication, audit and alarms to the basic packet router concept. However, proxy servers offer a higher level of security because there is no direct server connection to the Internet. Instead, the connection goes to a firewall where a "proxy session" is established. The lack of a direct connection means that hackers have no way to access to the server.
Firewall products employ "type enforcement" to ensure that the bit pattern of the data packet contents do not violate the protocol rules of the protocol contained in the packet header. If a violation is detected, the packet will not be processed and the connection will be dropped. The latest products in this rapidly expanding market also incorporate "virus control", where all the data packets are scanned by a virus search algorithm against a database of more than 7,000 known viruses.
Most firewalls are completely transparent to the network protocol, the network itself and the application, allowing network managers to secure their networks without disrupting the operating environment. The development of firewall products means that corporations and commercial organisations with multiple locations can now use the Internet at a low cost, secure virtual private network, connecting overseas offices to company-wide applications such as electronic mail.sameermedavhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17971768464503179994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640169413913018017.post-79083875399999378042011-07-18T01:09:00.001-07:002011-07-18T02:34:41.616-07:00computer historyAs early as the seventeenth century, mathematicians were trying to create a machine that could perform basic mathematical functions such as, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, and around 1640, Blaise Pascal, a leading French mathematician, constructed the first mechanical adding device. The programming language, Pascal, which is widely used today, was named after Blaise Pascal to honour his contribution to the development of the modern computer.
1804 saw the introduction of an automated punched card machine, which was used to operate weaving looms. This was the first known use of programmed instructions, which led the way to the concepts behind today's computers. Around this time, British inventor, Charles Babbage, designed an all-purpose problem-solving machine, the difference engine, which had a mechanical memory to store the results of calculations.
Babbage's partner, Augusta Ada, suggested using a binary system rather than decimal for data storage; she also refined the design of the analytical engine to include the automatic repetition of a series of calculations - the loop, a procedure used routinely in modern computer programmes.
In the 1850's, British mathematician, George Boole, realised that complex mathematical problems could be solved by reducing them to a series of questions, which could be answered either positively or negatively represented by either a 1 or a 0; thus the binary numbering system and Boolean logic was founded. This theory of Boolean logic became fundamental to the design of computer circuitry.
The early twentieth century saw the next stage in computer history, the first electronic machine, capable of solving simple differential equations. In 1937, George Stibitz constructed his complex number calculator from batteries, flashlight bulbs, wire and strips of metal from a tobacco can! This was the first binary adding machine, and paved the way for all digital computers.
In 1939, John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry built the Atanasoff-Berry computer, known simply as ABC, which is now acknowledged as the world's first general-purpose electronic digital computer. At the time, it raised little interest among the scientific community, and when Dr Atanasoff contacted IBM about his machine, the company said that it would never be interested in an electronic computing machine!!!
In 1941, at the height of the second world war, the first operational general purpose computer was built for Germany by Konrad Zuse. This machine used binary logic and employed vacuum tubes, which increased its speed by a factor of 1,000. However, when Zuse applied for funding to use his machine to break war-time codes, an estimated 2 year project, Hitler refused, insisting that the war would be over before the project was finished!
Alan Turing, an eccentric English genius, pursued Zuse's work and capitalised on his vacuum-tube technology. Turing constructed the Automatic Computer Engine (ACE), which could process 25,000 characters per second and which has also been described as the first programmable digital computer, a point still argued by many historians. In 1944, Howard Atkin, a US Harvard mathematician, completed the first automatic sequence-controlled calculator, the Mark 1. This monster was 51 feet long and 8 feet high and it contained over 750,000 parts strung together with 500 miles of wire.
In 1942, in the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Engineering, John Mauchly and J Presper Eckert built a machine to compute artillery firing tables for the Amercian goverment; this device weighing 30 tons and containing 100,000 electronic components, including 17,000 vacuum tubes, was called the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC). This machine was 80 feet long and 18 feet high and utilised the decimal numbering system. Mauchly and Eckert also claimed that ENIAC was the first general-purpose electronic digital computer, but in 1973 this matter was settled by a US court, which declared that the Atanasoff-Berry computer was entitled to that honour.
Improvements continued until 1959, when both Jack Kilby, at Texas Insturments, and Robert Noyce, at Fairchild Semiconductor, discovered that resistors, capacitors and transistors could be made from a semiconductor material and that vast numbers of transistors could be etched onto a single silicon chip. Thus, the age of integrated circuits had arrived, and from this point forward, computers continuously decreased in size and increased in power and performance.
The IBM System/360 series of mainframe computers, designed by Gene Amdahl, were introduced in the mid 1960's. The System/360 was a family of machines, with upward compatibility throughout the range providing a relatively cheap upgrade path. This was the era of miniaturisation, and in 1963 the Digital Equipment Corporation produced the first minicomputer, the PDP-1.
By 1970, Intel had produced a memory chip that could store one Kilobyte of information and in the early 1970s the same company managed to intergrate the arithmetic and logic functions of several chips onto a single chip, the world's first microprocessor which enabled the development of the first microcomputers. The earlist microcomputer, the Altair 8800, was developed in 1975 by Ed Roberts; this machine used the Intel microprocessor and had less than 1 kilobyte of memory. This was quickly followed by Tandy's TRS-80, Commodore Business Machine's Personal Electronic Transactor ( the commodore PET ), and the Apple 11, developed by Steve Jobs and Stephen Wozniak.
The market for microcomputer software was also developing at this time, and in 1974 Bill Gates and Paul Allen developed Microsoft BASIC which was used by all of the early microcomputers. In 1981, a momentous year for Microsoft and its founders, IBM adopted Microsoft BASIC and Microsoft's new microcomputer operating system, MS-DOS, for its own microcomputer, the IBM Personal Computer. By 1984, the IBM PC and the MS-DOS operating system had become the de facto standard adopted by all microcomputer suppliers. Microprocessor development, led by Intel and Motorola, was rapid; Intel chips set the PC standards and Motorola chips were adopted by Apple for its Macintosh range. Intel's early 8086 was superseded by the 80286, quickly followed by the 80386, 80486 and Pentium range.
The Computer Generations
First Generation
1951 to 1959
First generation computers were powered by vacuum tubes; they were extremely large machines, occupying huge rooms and consuming vast amounts of energy.
Second Generation
1959 to 1965
Second generation computer systems took advantage of semiconductor technology which meant that transistors replaced the vacuum tubes. This resulted in reduced physical size, faster computing and greater power. The transistor was initially developed by Bell Laboratories, a large US corporation.
Third Generation
1965 to 1971
Third generation computers were made from integrated circuits, again reducing size, faster computing and greater power. Integrated circuits at this time consisted of a piece of silicon about 10mm square on which up to one thousand transistors could be placed. Magnectic discs were improved, greatly increasing storage capacity. Input/Output devices such as monitors and keyboards were introduced and the operating system was first adopted. A new concept was also developed ; "families" of computers, which allowed for upgrading and expansion.
Forth Generation
1971 to Present
From integrated circuits to large scale integration to very large scale integration; this was the start of the microprocessor age. The microprocessor used continued to improve from the 8086, 80286 to the 80486, then Pentium, Pentium 2, and now Pentium 3.sameermedavhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17971768464503179994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640169413913018017.post-16624675253824247852011-07-18T00:56:00.001-07:002011-07-18T02:34:41.636-07:0015 general tips for nokia usersTips 1 : Do u know how to use the edit button (abc or pencil button)?

Heres how... In the inbox for example; u wanna delete multiple sms, simply hold the edit button, scroll down, and then, press c to delete the marked sms. The edit button can also b used to copy and past text in sms, simply hold it and scroll across, choose copy. Pretty good for placing song names in ngages

Tip 2 : Shit happens, on a smartphone, its inevitable u do something wrong, and tis calls for a format of fone. To format the fone, press *#7370#, then enter the lock code, which is the sec code of the fone. NOTE: batt must b full, else if format is disrupted by low batt, consequences will b disatrous.I heard the code *#7780# works too, pretty much the same i tink.

for 6600 users, to format the fone, theres an alternative way. Press and hold <3>, <*> and Call (Send) buttons, then power on fone, keep holding on the 3 buttons, till u come to a format screen. This method ONLY works on 6600, and need not enter the sec code. BUT sec code would be reset to default 12345.

Tip 3 : TO NGAGE USERS; Did u know u can install .sis files simply using the cable given? Juz plug it in, place the .sis file anywhere on e: (the mmc), not in any folders, root of e:, disconnect, then look for it in manager.

Tip 4: Save on battery and system memory being used by regulary checking the task manager which can be accessed by holding down the menu button!!

Tip 4a: Set the screen saver to a short time out period to prolong battery life.
Tip 4b: Avoid restarting the phone, or repeatedly turning it on and off. This helps increase battery life.

Tip 5: Type *#06# to display your IMEI serial number, very valuable for the unlocking your phone to other sim cards

Tip 6: Type *#0000# to view which firmware version you are running

Tip 7: If you would like to avoid being "blue jacked", keep bluetooth turned off, or set your phone's visibility to hidden.

Tip 8: Don't want to carry a watch and a phone? Set the screen saver to show date and time, then you can ditch the watch.

Tip 9: Save memory when installing apps, by installing over bluetooth. This can be done using the nokia phone suite and a bluetooth serial connection. Only works with .SIS files, so java still has to be sent to the phone, but will save space when using .SIS files.

Tip 10: Operator logos
Use a filemanager like FExplorer or SeleQ to add the folders: "c:/system/Apps/phone/oplogo". Add a .bmp picture to folder "oplogo" and restart your phone! The .bmp picture size needs to be: 97 x 25 pixels

Tip 11: Check if the recepients phone is on
Delivery reports

or

Type *0# your message in the message composer window space then write your message, the recipient will not see the star zero hash bit - just the message When they read it it will relay a message back to your fone showing the time they recieved it. (haven't yet tried it myself though)

Tip 12: BlueJacking

First up, you need to know what Bluetooth is. There are lots of types of modern devices that incorporate Bluetooth as one of their many features. PDAs, mobile phones and laptops are a few of these modern devices. Bluetooth means that Bluetooth enabled devices can send things like phonebook/address book contacts, pictures & notes to other Bluetooth enabled devices wirelessly over a range of about 10 metres. So, we've got past the boring part. Now, using a phone with Bluetooth, you can create a phonebook contact and write a message, eg.

Tip 13: While you are viewing a picture in your phone's gallery, press one of these shortcut keys (definitely works on 6600, not sure about other symbians)
1 - turn image anticlockwise
3 - turn image clockwise
* - toggle on/off of full screen
5 - zoom in
0 - zoom out

Tips 14 :u can select all files in a folder by selecting THE folder and copy it then paste it somewhere. However u need to make a new directory. Fexplorer wun let u copy that folder together. Well seleQ can mark files to copy but it really takes time!

Tips 15 :A soft and Hard reset
A Soft-reset - the process of resetting all the settings of the phone to the factory default! No applications are deleted! A Hard-reset is like formatting a drive! It does format the memory. Everything that has been installed after the first use of the phone is deleted! It will recover the memory of the phone to the state you purchased it! It is done by inputing the following code: *#7370# NOTE: The battery must be full or the charger has to be connected to the phone so that it does not run out of power and make the phone unusable.sameermedavhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17971768464503179994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6640169413913018017.post-28850758696944021312011-07-18T00:48:00.000-07:002011-07-18T02:34:35.435-07:00change n73 or symbian fontWARNING!!!
